Dancing With Grace Newsletter

Happy National Dance Day July 31st!

Message to Our Students

Dear All,

The last two months have flown by and we are happy to report many successes. I just arrived back from The Latin Dance World Congress which was one of my favorite congresses that I have ever attended. Every type of Latin dance was represented, not just Salsa. It was wonderful. Instead of it being a bunch of salsa camps fighting each other for attention and floor space it was groups of every kind of dancing to include tango, cha-cha, merengue, bachata, mambo and salsa. It was fantastic! We look forward to being involved with the congress next year and performing with our new dance team, THE DWG ANGELS.

Yes, we have begun our dance team of angels that will be learning a belly dance/salsa fusion performance; mixing the elegance of belly dance with salsa without vulgarity! We are beginning training in July so if you want to join its that time! Read more about it in Topic #7 of this newsletter.

Besides that, I was nominated to receive the Women of Salsa Award in August of 2010 in Washington DC and I am very honored! I thank God for my accomplishments related to Salsa.

Hugo and I have been busy trying to find ELEGANT locations with HARDWOOD FLOORS for our socials and we have 2 locations and will begin our monthly socials. We have an affordable Latin Dance Social one Sunday a month at Don Vicente in Ybor City (info in this newsletter). Another one of our events is at Maggiano's one Wednesday a month. The Maggiano's event is perfect if you want to impress your date, family or just have a girls night out that includes fine Italian food and lessons at Maggiano's in their ballrooms, yes ballrooms! They have just put in BRAND NEW HARDWOOD FLOORS FOR US! If you cant afford the food, come later for the social for only $10 but you must dress to impress! Our locations are not night club settings but elegant locations for mature people who aren't into the "meat market/drinking to get drunk/ego maniac dancing scene!" Not all of us enjoy the typical salsa scene.

We hope to see you all there and pray for each and every one of our students every single day. Thank you for your support during this tough economic time; if you cant afford lessons but want some, please email Grace at grace@dancingwithgrace.com Maybe you can help DWG in some other capacity and we can trade your talent for ours! Just because you don't have $ doesnt mean you are not valuable!

God Bless You All!

Sincerely,

Grace and Hugo Badillo

Grace’s Salsa Tips

Grace's Salsa Tips

Tip #1: Dancing For A Reason. You will likely hear me talk to students about dancing for more than yourself. What can you do for your community? Can you help organize an event to raise money for a good cause? If you know dancers and/or groups of dances, maybe you can get them to perform at an event? Use dance for more than yourself for then it will be a hobby worth enjoying.

Tip #2: Salsa Scene Burn Out. What is this you ask? Salsa Scene Burn Out is just that, you have over done it and are tired of the scene. For some, burn out is something all together different; they have experienced a terrible instructor and try another one and experience another bad situation and try again and hit another brick wall. Sadly, this is very common. Everyone and their brother seems to think they are a good dance instructor with no INSTRUCTOR TRAINING. If you notice, I didn't mention dance training, I mentioned instructor training. It is very important when searching for an instructor that you ask who they train with and if they continue to train. All dance instructors should be in a constant state of learning. Much of the learning has to do with how to treat delicate situations, sensitive students and smart business practices. Many of you experiencing burn out need to read this slowly. How many apartments or homes have you seen before deciding on where you were going to live? Or how many cars did you test drive before you decided on the car you wanted to buy? Many of you answered more than 3. Finding a good instructor takes a few tries, just like making a big purchase. Over time you can spend thousands on dance lessons. It is worth getting references, watching lessons and discussing the instructors mission for their students. Don't allow someone's poor training to get in the way of your great training! Keep looking and you will find the right instructor for you.

We also recommend that Intermediate/Adv people take beginner classes to focus on many of the things they skipped when they first began dancing salsa. Our lessons are designed to challenge beginners to realize their talent and possibly stay on to try the more difficult techniques in the second hour.

  • 8:30-9:30 pm: These lessons are not pattern classes. They focus on specific techniques to become a great salsa dancer. Focus and repetition is key.

August Guest Cha-Cha-Cha Instructor

Damian Martorana
Damien Martorana
To Teach in Grace's Absence!!

Check out this fantastic instructor on

August 3, 2010

at Rizing Starz

Damian Martorana is a shining talent that many people including the judges of So You Think You Can Dance & Dancing With The Stars hire.

Biography:

Damian Martorana
Founder & CEO
Rhythm Fitness and The Rhythm Fever Dance Show

In the Sicilian language, "Martorana" means, "sweet candy". At 6 foot 4, Damian Martorana is "eye candy" on the dance floor. Whether dancing a seductive tango or a lively waltz, Damian has mastered the art of Ballroom and Latin Dancing. However upon first glance, one would certainly not associate Damian with dancing. In fact, if you guess athlete, you would be half correct.

Damian’s enthusiasm to perform would continue, but on a different floor. College introduced him to film, theater and art, which became his passion. Eager to make a professional transition into entertainment, Damian sought out the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Rochester, for a teaching opportunity. Within six months, Damian relocated to Orlando, Florida to open a studio and become a professional ballroom dancer. After two years of intensive study, Damian created Rhythm Fitness, combining his athletic and dance skills into a low-to-medium impact aerobic class. Bally’s Total Fitness quickly recognized what a hit Rhythm Fitness could be, and the program is now taught throughout their Central Florida locations. Damian believes that ballroom dance fitness is “the only thing you can take home from the gym.”

Damian MartoranaDamian’s performance training extends beyond the dance floor. He has trained under Ken Eulo and the New York Acting Ensemble in Orlando, performing in several productions and earning critical praise. Inspired by the acting skills developed under NYAE, Damian introduced The Rhythm Fever Show, a theatrical ballroom dance experience that would separate him from more straight- forward dance performances. Rhythm Fever marries ballroom dancing and storytelling, revolving around themes of forbidden love, money and power and self-discovery. Rhythm Fever is like an evening at a Broadway show.

Whether instructing or performing, Damian feels blessed to share his talents with others and to have an opportunity to make an impact on the ballroom dance world. This is one “fever” you will want to have!

 5. Is Dancing A Sin?

Have you ever wondered if dance is a sin? Many of us have been taught about God (the creator of Heaven & Earth). What does He say about Dance? To read Grace's article, "Is Dancing A Sin" click here:

Grace would love to know your opinion. Email her at grace@dancingwithgrace.com

Check out the last email I received about this article:

Dear Grace,

My name is J and I have really been struggling with this issue of dance as a sin lately. I absolutely LOVE to dance and find it as a great joy. However at social dances people have made it so sinful and i know it is sinful. I was really frustrated with the fact that if dancing was a sin i would be missing out on something i really love. So then i did what any typical teenager would do and i used google, i googled "dancing at parties is a sin" and your page came up. I LOVED the fact that you backed up everything with the Bible because I really enjoy reading the Bible and to know that everything is truth really helps me to relate. So anyways I just really want to thank you because you have helped me so much and God's light has shown through you! I can dance and glorify God and it is not a sin, unless I lustfully make it one. Having respect for myself will pay off in the long run and others will respect me! THANK YOU SO MUCH, you have truly inspired me

Through Christ,
J

Hi Grace-

I loved your article on dancing.   I grew up being told it was a sin…so I was prohibited from dancing.   So guess what I wanted to do most of my life?  Yep!

BTW…Is there a sinful form of dancing?…of course.   And there is a sinful form of eating, driving cars, watching TV, recreating etc.

I loved your take on the issue.   Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned and experienced.

As a Baptist Minister, and Christian radio Talk show host I now enjoy dancing with my wife…and I DON’T CARE anymore what the legalists say.

Neil
PS  I’m not much of a dancer…but it’s fun, and I hate the fact that the enemy tried to steal it from God’s people.  Well, I am committed to taking it back!

DWG Announces "DWG Angels" Dance Team in Tampa

When:  If you havent auditioned and are interested come meet us on July 6th, 13th, 20th, or 27th
Time:   9:30 pm - 10:30pm
Where: Rizing Starz Dance Studio, 4244 Waters Avenue, Tampa, FL
(white building w/blue awnings) across the street from The Copa Restaurant.

What are the DWG Angels?
The DWG Angels will be a group of dancers dedicated to entertaining the general public but more importantly the charities the group is inspired to help. In previous years DWG has helped many organizations through dance (checkout some of the organization DWG and volunteers have helped in the past). This team will not be dancing for personal pride or to please and satisfy egos. This group will consist of believers of God Almighty. This dance team will dance for the disabled, orphans, elderly, rape victims, the sick, poor, homeless, & poor in spirit. All faiths, colors, shapes and sizes are welcomed!

Level of Dancers:
DWG is looking for intermediate/advanced dancers, but at this time we actually have some beginner ladies taking privates to catch up to the group; so far this team is composed of LADIES ONLY and we are doing a belly dance/salsa fusion performance. Regardless of your level, we are beginning from scratch in our practices. Since some of you are on the brink of being intermediates, we expect that you prepare and practice dancing alone and/or take as many lessons as possible to catch up to the ladies on our team. Practices actually begin July 1st at another location, but anyone interested can come to the studio to meet Grace, join the lessons & feel the group out. We will perform this number at more than 10 different locations. If you arent ready when we do our first performance and you are ready when we do our 5th performance, then you can join in at that time! This group is and will be sensitive to the needs of each dancer, their dance level and their comfort level for performing. You may also join and not perform but do it for the experience of learning; if you do not perform, we do expect you to help and assist at the non-profit events with the team.

The best thing about being in (our dance group) is the unity we will all feel within the group and everybody sharing the love of dance and the joy of giving to others. We work together toward the same goal. What's the reward? Giving of our personal talents to make others feel joy, feel love, and know that they are not alone in their trials, but that we and God are with them.

Our dance group will perform for many different events and we may even have the opportunity to be televised and invited to perform all over the United States. You will experience, friendship, love, laughs, support and joy. There will be no vanity, drama or malicious gossip about other dance groups tolerated. This is meant to challenges you to greatness within. Team members must be able to deal with constructive criticism or be asked to leave the group. Please read my article: The Use of Constructive Criticism in Dance Education.

Cost For First Timers Coming In To Possibly Join The Group: $10

Group Training/Practices:
Once you are officially on the team, practices will cost $5 each and be twice a week on various days that fit the group's schedule; at this time July and August practice dates will be Tuesdays (9:30-10:30 pm) and Thursdays 7-9 pm practices. All practices must be paid in advance and are not refundable. DWG will offset the rest of the floor fee for all practices. Most floor fees in studios range from $10-25 per person. FYI: DWG will not make money off these lessons. This will be for the floor fee only; we will pay the rest of everyone's floor fees for them. If God blesses you and you want to pay for everyone's floor fee one day then Thank YOU LORD! ha ha

We hope to see you and cant wait to meet people who care enough to share their talents with others!

Sincerely,

The DWG Team
