Message to Our Students & Thank You to the Alonso Family

Dear All,

Its May & there are exciting things happening! Besides the opening of our new location at The Belvedere on May 8th (Thursday) in the Grand Ballroom & June 14th (Saturday Evening Salsa & Cha-Cha) at The Belvedere, I have recently become the Latin Scene & Dance Club Editor of the famous www.senbaltimore.com. They are known for music but are branching out to the Latin Scene & Dance Clubs. They can be found online and on Comcast Cable. They also have their own magazine and for those of you who know me, I love to write; I will also begin writing for their magazine! This is a great and exciting development! I will begin reviewing locations everywhere to better serve Baltimore and YOU!

On another note Hugo, Grace & the DWG Team want to recognize The Alonso Family/Gardels Family for their work and dedication to Latin Dance in Baltimore. Although we will not be using them as our promoters anymore, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for all the memories we have created together. We wish you the best and hope that your future promotions are a success.

Well everyone, we hope to see you out there somewhere and thank you for your support. I like to think that regardless of the venues we may frequent to teach, that the one thing they all have in common is YOU! I truly believe that whether or not you can afford the lessons or just show up early to get in free-we appreciate you! Whether you just drink tap water or sample some wine we appreciate you! You are a blessing to us and you honor us with your presence in our lives. Gracias Amigos y Amigas!

Sincerely,
Grace, Hugo & the DWG Team

Great Latina Women In History

Eileen Torres

Eileen Torres w/ Grace
(Mexico/USA)

Eileen Torres is a great Latina woman making history. Eileen Torres learned to dance Rumba from her father at the age of five. She began performing Mexican folk dance during the Fiestas in her hometown of Lorain, Ohio at the age of six. She taught herself to dance to tropical Latin rhythms by listening to Perez Prado recordings at about the same time. While at the University of Colorado she co-founded the university's first Folkloric Ballet . After studying several dance disciplines, she graduated with a Minor in Dance in 1974. Upon returning to Ohio in 1975, she became an instructor and choreographer for the youth troupe, Alma de Mexico. She began teaching Salsa there in 1976. In 1977, she began performing hustle and Latin dance. In 1978, Eileen successfully auditioned for The National Chicano Dance Theater based in Denver, Colorado. The company dramatized the Chicano experience through dance. She toured with the company for two years. Back in Ohio in 1985, she formed and choreographed for the performing group, Salseros Unlimited.

Eileen Torres has lectured on Salsa in many venues including The Kennedy Center, National Geographic Society, The Pentagon, the World Salsa Congress in Puerto Rico, The European Salsa Festival in The Netherlands, and the Washington DC Salsa Festival among others. In addition, she was contracted by Starbucks Coffee Company to collaborate on the Latin compilation CD titled Mambo Mio. She assisted in the selection of the music, wrote the liner notes on the origins of Latin music, and created a piece on each artist.

Ms. Torres is President of Salsation Productions and Publisher of Salsacentro.com, a web site dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Salsa music. She currently is preparing to produce and host a cable television show titled Salsa Centro. Her articles on Salsa have been published in Latina Style, Latin Beat and LATIN VIBES Magazine. In addition, she is a well-known promoter of Salsa Dance Nights in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. She received the Andy Award for her work as a historian and producer of Salsa events during the 2002 World Salsa Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has worked with the National Council of La Raza, HACR (Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility), Latino Sports Ventures, ZGS Communications, and Latina Style Magazine. She is an alumnus of National Hispanic Leadership Institute and has served as a consultant to the National Hispanic Corporate Council.

A pioneer and speaker, Eileen is a great example of a Latina Woman making history right in our own neighborhood! She has recently moved to Severn, Maryland and plans on working with Grace on other speaking and teaching engagements. We applaud her on her fantastic career, community work and dedication to salsa dance and music.

Jessica & Grace’s Salsa Tips

Jessica's' Salsa Tips

Tip#1: Rough Leading: This can be a difficult habit to break, but it is essential to the comfort of the lady and in many cases to the successful execution of the dance. It is a sensitive area to address and can be embarrassing for both parties. But ladies, he isn't trying to hurt you! If he is, he likely doesn't realize it and your mentioning it, however awkward, is actually relieving. In all the times I've said something, the leader was apologetic - and grateful - for my bringing it to his attention. Unfortunately, there are times when the message doesn't sink in. I was dancing recently and despite saying something to the leader twice, my arm was still wrenched in its socket and my wrists squeezed and twisted uncomfortably. I felt like a rag doll being pulled and pushed about and there is nothing sexy or attractive about that! This is a habit the leader will have to break...before she runs out of patience or he runs out of willing dance partners.

My recommendation: Ladies, if you're uncomfortable in any way, say something - kindly! If you have a special area of sensitivity (I herniated a disc in my back once and it was hypersensitive for months)...protect it! And guys, be open to her comments! If you are leading too hard and your partner says something - apologize (to her) and try to be more gentle, there is never a need to grab the lady in anyway that will make her feel uncomfortable. Remember you are leading not dragging her!

To all dancers: realize that your receptivity to each other's respective needs is what makes the dance. After all, in the midst of the dim and the music and the fun...dancing is about connection between you and your partner. Enjoy each other! =)

Tip #2: Protecting your partner: Grace's Tip: In addition to what Jessica wrote last month, I believe one of the problems with protecting your partner is that teachers are not stressing to their students to dance in a slot and to align themselves beside dancers dancing in the same direction. When directions change as they often do in dance, the lead must look at the line they are now in. Are they now diagonal to these other couples? Will leading a cross body lead slam his partner into someone? If so.. move with rhythm into a safe slot and enjoy the dance together as one.

YOU SMELL!

You Smell

This picture above is so adorable & funny that I had to leave it in until someone else can find me a picture that is cuter than this one! We all smell.. some good.. some bad.. some really funkylicious.  It’s okay, you aren’t alone.  Some of us don’t use deodorant and its a cultural thing.  Sometimes the problem is that people who are already sweating put on deodorant again, on top of the last batch they used. This can amplify the deodorant smell x 10 and make you smell worse! Be careful! Some of us don’t use deodorant and its a cultural thing. Well, we love all cultures in America but can’t stand to smell the funk that may come along with activities that cause you to perspire more than usual. Pretty please with sugar on top, can you use deodorant? Your future spouse and dance partner will really appreciate it and your teacher will too! ha ha.. Feel the funk-don’t smell it!

Hi Grace & Hugo

I finally was able to make it out to a Sat. class last night. Niss taught an excellent combination. I failed to let him know at the end of class. I really love the sling shot moves, but have never included them in my repertoire. (Don't know why?) Niss's combo included two sling shots (one at the shoulder and the other at the waist. (Nice!) I did the move in every dance last night. It's now a part of my muscle memory.

A salsera made a comment to me last night. She said because of the way I dance, that I really did not need to take a class. I mentioned to her that you should always take a class. If not a group class, then you should take a private. I see a lot of salseros who never take classes anymore. These are the same salseros I use to see taking classes when I started 1 1/2 years ago. Some of them have made comments to me on how I have up(ed) my game in salsa. What they don't realize is that I practice a lot, and I still take classes. Not as many classes, but I still take them.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that I think you're the tops and I love your instruction. By the way I promoted your DVD to a salsero last night. I have lots of DVD's but I always promote yours as the first one they should get.

Billy Hall

Dear Grace,

I enjoyed your article, "Is Dancing A Sin? - A Biblical Perspective" It was excellent and biblically accurate. I'm in total agreement with your argument, and would like to add and echo, that Dance can be:

A. Evil (expression)-see Exod.32v.19; Matt.14v6; Mark 6 v22

OR

B. Finally, in the famous parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus the Christ tells the parable of a lost son returning to his father (after living like a wild man doing anything and everything, wasting money and his reputation on"riotous living") to help people understand the Kingdom of Heaven and states, (Luke 15 v.22.22-25)

(v.22.22) "But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him (his riotous living son who was lost and now has returned to his father) and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet: and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry....(v.25.25) Now his elder son was in the field and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard MUSIC and DANCING.

Thus, here Jesus the Christ shares that there is MUSIC and DANCING (expressions of JOY) in the Kingdom of Heaven.

So, Grace and Hugo, Let's Dance, and express to all we come in contact with the Joy of the Lord expressed thru DANCE and GOOD WORKS of LOVE to as many as we can touch in 2008 and for eternity!

Love,
Billy Hall

St. Thomas is known as an idyllic vacation spot today, but its history is not so peaceful. In the 18th century, the island was at the center of a bustling pirate culture, as swashbuckling pirates such as Blackbeard and Drake traded stolen wares in the port of Charlotte Amalie. This world-renowned Caribbean island is home to amazing beaches, gorgeous sea and landscapes and unbelievable duty-free shopping.

One of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico's landscape encompasses mountains, underground caves, coral reefs, white-sand beaches and an incredibly massive rain forest that supplies fresh water to most of the island. At the same time San Juan, the capital of the commonwealth, is a big city with a bustling business district, glitzy resorts and casinos, as well as one of the most stunning examples of colonial life in the Western world.

On the north coast of Hispaniola, surrounded by beautiful mountain slopes and exotic foliage, sits LabadeeĀ®, Royal Caribbean's private paradise. This exclusive destination offers pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery and spectacular water activities. We even have an amazing new Aqua Park for kids. Regardless of where you go, you'll find yourself embraced by the beautiful landscape. Labadee's native charm, along with its natural beauty, make this a destination not to be missed, and only Royal Caribbean can take you there.

Ranazul Restaurant
Ranazul RestaurantThis is, without a doubt, one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to in years. In a word this location is impeccable: Impeccable Service, Impeccable Drinks, Impeccable Wine selections and Impeccable Food that is out of this world. The food is five stars for the price of a three star restaurant! The serving sizes are just right and eating here will take you on a delightful journey to taste buds you never knew existed. The ambiance is ultra sheik with sumptuously soft leather chairs, sensitive lighting, and a great sound system for all to enjoy. This location also boasts an incredible mini-gallery of art for the truly creative collector. After leaving this location guests are enchanted. It’s a rarity to find a restaurant that feels like home but with a royal appeal that leaves you wanting for one more dessert and one more bottle of vino porfavor! I highly recommend that you take the time to reserve a table at this wonderful restaurant and become one of Ranazul ’ s guests at last; you will certainly go home completely satisfied and feeling like royalty! Tell them that Grace sent you. Located at: 8171 Maple Lawn Blvd. Suite 170 Maple Lawn, MD 20759; Phone: 301-498-9666
