Latin Aerobics w/ Grace!

Come to our  Aerobic Class on Saturday, October 7th at 3:00 PM  This class is low impact but you will certainly do more than 5 miles of stepping, moving, shaking and bakin' along with a cool down and abs routine.  Try this class to see if you will like Latin Aerobics.  Grace will have the assistance of Dawn Isola an aerobics and strengthening trainer.    Dawn will be here 30 minutes prior to the class to answer any health/fitness questions you might have & to book private aerobics classes or personal training sessions.

Bring your friends and try something fun for a change.  As much as I hate to exercise I really think this is a great way to escape the normalcy and boredom of regular aerobics classes.

Date: Saturday, Oct 7th, 2006
Time: 3 - 4 p.m.
Cost: $10 per person

There will also be a ladies cross body lead workshop on the same day at 1:00 pm.   Add this to your day and you can eat all the brownies you like for dinner!

We Need Your Help!

As you all know the DWG Family does lots of volunteer service teaching dance to children, seniors, & the less fortunate.  This year Grace has been invited to be on the committee that plans the Festival of Trees by The Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Kennedy Krieger is an internationally recognized center for research, treatment, education & training focused on problems that affect a child's developing brain including but not limited to autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, spina bifida, mental retardation and spinal cord injury.

It is a great honor for our team to be involved in helping raise money to provide care for the needy in America and our team is up to the challenge of spending an entire weekend Nov 24-26, 2007 doing merengue and salsa lessons for children and adults, organizing dance performances, getting donations, volunteers involved and more.

As all of you know DWG happens to have the sweetest students in the universe and that is why we are asking for your help.  Would you like Free Tickets?

We need:

  • Gingerbread House Donations which will go on sale that weekend.
  • Decorated Wreaths (artificial or dried) which will also go on sale that weekend.
  • Donations for the silent auction which can be gift certificates, crafts, anything valuable you believe will get bids.
  • Couples to Volunteer a Dance Performance of any kind.
  • Student Volunteers to help in the children's classes on Fri/Sat in the a.m.
  • Student Volunteers to help man the DWG Booth promoting the classes for entertainment during the weekend.
  • Financial donation of any size.

All the proceeds will go towards providing the costly & necessary physical therapy & training for these children.  Let this be your good deed for 2006!  If you donate anything listed above you will receive 10 free tickets to the Festival of Trees for your Family worth $100.

Please contact Grace@dancingwithgrace.com if there is anything you can do to help this wonderful and noble cause.  Contact your friends to see if they can donate too & make this your new family tradition as the festival of trees is one of the most wonderful holiday experiences you could ever attend.  Just imagine the Timonium State Fairgrounds decorated with hundreds of Christmas Trees, Christmas Booths, bands, entertainment & more!  If Santa Had a Theme Park, This would be it!

Grace's Salsa Concepts

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1: To Everyone: This is a sensitive subject but I am famous for saying what ever is on my mind so here goes.  This is to all you SWEATY, DRIPPING, SOMETIMES STINKY, NEED ANOTHER SHIRT & A SHOWER dancers.  There is something completely disgusting about dancing with someone who is dripping wet.  If I am the least bit moist I am apologizing immediately & ready to run to the bathroom to towel down!  Dancers, if you know you sweat then bring a TOWEL and an EXTRA SHIRT  or TWO!  You will be surprised how many more people will dance with you.  Guys, there are at least 15 girls a month complaining about sweaty, drenched shirts on men so don't  kill the messenger!  :)  This means my instructors too! EW! :-)

Tip #2:  When you learn to dance salsa and you have a humble heart, you may start to realize that you don't look as smooth as you would like.  If you have been learning for a few years then maybe it’s time that you take a private class.  Shh!  No one has to know.  We can keep it a secret!  Some of you could be incredible dancers if you would just invest in a few privates to smooth out all of the wrinkles in your dancing.  See heading : No. 7 titled "Will Private Classes Help Me?" for more information on private classes.

Salsa Music CD of the Month

Plante Bandera - Tommy Olivencia & Su Orquesta

Plante Bandera
Tommy Olivencia & Su Orquesta

Plante Bandera was the final collaboration between the now late Tommy Olivencia and the late Chamaco Ramírez. Released on December 30, 1992, Plante Bandera, in my opinion as a confirmed Salsaholic, this is the best salsa album of the 1990’s, especially in a decade where the "salsa romantica" style had taken over. Plante Bandera, Casimira, Evelio y la Rumba, & Si Estas Herido are all hard hitting salsa’s with solid arrangements. This is a timeless album that will still sound great 50 years from now. For those of you that consider yourself salseros & salseras, you need this album. Sabrosón!

Tommy Olivencia passed away very recently on Friday, September 22, 2006. He was 68. The world of salsa suffered a great loss Tommy Olivencia will be remembered for his many contributions to the world of salsa, for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, great friend to those who knew him and for being a practical joker (a man after my own heart!) May you rest in peace!

Importance of Listening to the Music

Salsa Music

If you want to be a great salsa dancer one of the things you need to do is develop an ear for the music. By listening and understanding the music you will be able to dance to it better. Listen to it, learn to hear the changes in the music from verse to chorus to breaks in the music and back to the verse.

Suggestions for when you can listen to it would be:

  • Getting ready to come to class Tuesday, Friday or Saturday nights.
  • While you make dinner, a real dinner, not McDonalds okay!
  • While Relaxing: What is that you ask? Whether its while you have a spot of tea or a small glass of wine sit back and relax for once!
  • Getting ready in the morning! Add some salsa to your mornings and put some pep in your step. Be careful and don't dance in the shower okay!
  • In the car while you are driving. Try not taking a cell phone, take a minute, and enjoy the moment and the music. You deserve it.

1. Ladies Cross Body Lead Workshop & Latin Aerobics, October 7th

Grace's workshops are very detailed and filled with a wealth of excellent styling tips. Not only can she beautifully demonstrate each dance step, but she has the ability of breaking these steps down in an easy to follow step-by-step manner (a skill which only a few salsa instructors in the world seem to be capable of doing). Every dance movement is broken down according to the "On 1" timing. Ladies Styling moves are added once students have mastered the basic principles behind the step. Occasionally, some dance steps have more than one variation of ladies styling to them. When this is the case, Grace or one of the other DWG instructors will execute these variations and let their students decide for themselves which version fits their style.   It’s that time again ladies; time to brush up on your cross body leads and body movement technique.  This class will be small so come and get the attention you deserve.

October 7, 2006 from 1PM to 5PM at the Promenade Dance Sport Facility 2605 Lord Baltimore Drive, Baltimore, MD  21244

1:00-2:45 p.m.  Cross Body Lead Workshop, Review & Drills:  Tired of losing your balance?  Uncertain of your footwork?  Do you want to master your Cross Body Lead so that you can eventually begin to use your arms in a stylish manner?  Grace has put together a 2 hour Cross Body workshop because she feels ladies need more than 1 hour of instruction and practice during a workshop.  Bring your questions & spend some time focusing on one of the most important movements of salsa.  This class will have two 10 minute breaks.

3:00-4:00 p.m.  Latin Aerobics: Bring your tennis shoes and get ready to "get down" to great Latin hits while burning off some of that ice cream or pizza you love!  Try Grace's Latin Aerobics Class.  Grace has been teaching this class to private health clubs for over 5 years.  This class will also include a cool down and ab workout. Come and have some fun!

4:00-5:00 p.m.  Ladies Styling Cool Down:  As we cool down from our Latin Aerobics we will use this hour to focus on slow movements of the hips, shoulders and body.  We must first master stylish movements slowly to understand what are bodies are doing.  Grace will also use this class to help you relax into stretching any soreness away!

Pre Registration Rates:

1 Hour 45 minute Cross Body Lead Workshop:  $35

    Latin Aerobics w/Grace: $10.00

    Ladies Styling Cool Down: $20.00

The Door Rate will be $5.00 more for each class.  ($40, $15, $25) There will be no refunds if you do not show up as we reserve the floor for each student.

Sign up now and get the discounted rate!

Attire: Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes are fine or the aerobic class only.  They will inhibit your spins in salsa and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like.  Or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International.  They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Student of The Month

Wayne and Grace

Congratulations to Wayne Kaczmarkiewicz for being the student of the month.  This month we chose Wayne because he is a true patriot of the arts!  Dancing everything from Tango, Swing, Cha-Cha, Bachata, Merengue to Salsa, he is a great example of what dedication means.  Recently, he and Grace practiced a choreography and performed it at CMS Medicare/Medicaid for Hispanic Heritage Month.  It was broadcast all over the nation.  Not only did Wayne do well, but he hit the dips and nailed the choreography!  He also volunteered his time and assisting services to help Grace at the Tavis Smiley Road to Health Fair at the Baltimore Convention Center on September 22, 2006 that DWG did for charity.  Please congratulate him when you see him at the club!  We are proud of you Wayne AKA the Mimbo King not Mambo King, Mimbo King! ha ha Who knows what Mimbo Means? Email grace at grace@dancingwithgrace.com   We love you Wayne!

Sincerely,
