"Hispanic Americans: Our Rich Culture Contributing to America's Future"

Latin Aerobics w/ Grace!

Come to our Trial Aerobic Class on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 3:00 p.m.  This class is low impact but you will certainly do more than 5 miles of stepping, moving, shaking and bakin' along with a cool down and abs routine.  Try this class to see if you will like Latin Aerobics.  Grace will have the assistance of Dawn Isola an aerobics and strengthening trainer.    Dawn will be here 30 minutes prior to the class to answer any health/fitness questions you might have & to book private aerobics classes or personal training sessions.

Bring your friends and try something fun for a change.  As much as I hate to exercise I really think this is a great way to escape the normalcy and boredom of regular aerobics classes.

Date: Saturday, Oct 7th, 2006
Time: 3 - 4 p.m.
Cost: $10 per person

There will also be a ladies cross body lead workshop on the same day at 1:00 pm.   Add this to your day and you can eat all the brownies you like for dinner!

Grace's Salsa Concepts

Grace Salsa Concept

Tip #1:  Ladies,  just because a man dances with 15 different women in a given evening doesn't mean he is a player.  Please don't treat him as if he is a dog the moment he asks for your number!  Salsa dancers dance with everyone.  Now, if he goes home with 15 different women in any given month then he is a player, ha ha!  If you want to know a man's true character there is one simple solution, don't sleep with him!  Sorry guys!

Tip #2:  Gentleman, I and many of the women out there dancing are tired of being asked to dance immediately after we just finished an 11 minute salsa and are obviously wet with sweat and need a break. The rule is dance one and sit one out to save your feet from wear and tear.  You don't have to dance in heels guys so please be patient with us :)

Men's Salsa Fashions
On Sale at Gardels!

Antonio will be bringing men's guajaberas for sale at Gardel’s on Fridays.  These gorgeous shirts are usually $40 - $75 each and he will be selling them for $20 - $35 each.  He will accept cash or check and also be taking orders if he does not have your size or color preference.

Don't forget that "to dance the part" it sometimes helps "to look the part".

Salsa Music CD of the Month

Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz 40 Aniversario.jpg

40 Aniversario En Vivo
Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz

Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz celebrate their 40th anniversary with their 100th album, a wonderful 3 disc release – “40 Aniversario En Vivo”. Recorded live in February 2003 at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, P.R., this CD set features many famous artist like Alex D'Castro, Bobby Valentin, Johnny Pacheco, & Papo Lucca to name a few. This CD has all of the classics from Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz like Sonido Bestial, La Zafra, Ahora Vengo Yo, Pancho Cristal, & many many more. Maria Cervantes is an instrumental salsa with a Latin Jazz feel; it is also the longest song at 13 minutes 55 seconds. La Zafra is the fastest tempo salsa in the album. Make sure you stretch before dancing to this song. Not only do you get salsa with this recording but you also get a couple of Boleros and a Bomba.

40 Aniversario en Vivo also has three new songs – 40 Años, Celebrando El Numbero 100, and Chan Chan Ki Nih Nah. Add this to your growing collection. You won’t regret it. This is not leaving my CD changer for the rest of the summer and beyond. This is by far one of the best CD’s I have listened to all year. Weeepaaaa!

Student Emails

Hugo,

I realize that it has been over a month since the wedding but time really flies. I want you to know how much Giovanni and I enjoyed your private lessons. As someone who never danced salsa before you gave me the confidence that I needed for our first dance as husband and wife. You were so very patient with us and I can not tell you how many compliments we received from our guests. Many of them asked how we learned so many moves in such a short period of time. I have recommended you too all of them and have told them all about your videos and lessons at Gardels.  Thank you once again for everything you did for us. I actually enjoy dancing for the first time in my life and we continue to go to Gardels so I can pick up more moves.

Sincerely,
Giovanni and Lisa Colón

We get emails from our students all the time.  Send us your thoughts and possibly  have your email posted!  We care about what you think! Email us

We Need Your Help!

As you all know the DWG Family does lots of volunteer service teaching dance to children, seniors, & the less fortunate.  This year Grace has been invited to be on the committee that plans the Festival of Trees by The Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Kennedy Krieger is an internationally recognized center for research, treatment, education & training focused on problems that affect a child's developing brain including but not limited to autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, spina bifida, mental retardation and spinal cord injury.

It is a great honor for our team to be involved in helping raise money to provide care for the needy in America and our team is up to the challenge of spending an entire weekend Nov 24-26, 2007 doing merengue and salsa lessons for children and adults, organizing dance performances, getting donations, volunteers involved and more.

As all of you know DWG happens to have the sweetest students in the universe and that is why we are asking for your help.  Would you like Free Tickets?

We need:

  • Gingerbread House Donations which will go on sale that weekend.
  • Decorated Wreaths (artificial or dried) which will also go on sale that weekend.
  • Donations for the silent auction which can be gift certificates, crafts, anything valuable you believe will get bids.
  • Couples to Volunteer a Dance Performance of any kind.
  • Student Volunteers to help in the children's classes on Fri/Sat in the a.m.
  • Student Volunteers to help man the DWG Booth promoting the classes for entertainment during the weekend.
  • Financial donation of any size.

All the proceeds will go towards providing the costly & necessary physical therapy & training for these children.  Let this be your good deed for 2006!  If you donate anything listed above you will receive 10 free tickets to the Festival of Trees for your Family worth $100.

Please contact Grace@dancingwithgrace.com if there is anything you can do to help this wonderful and noble cause.  Contact your friends to see if they can donate too & make this your new family tradition as the festival of trees is one of the most wonderful holiday experiences you could ever attend.  Just imagine the Timonium State Fairgrounds decorated with hundreds of Christmas Trees, Christmas Booths, bands, entertainment & more!  If Santa Had a Theme Park, This would be it!

Importance of Listening to the Music

Salsa Music

If you want to be a great salsa dancer one of the things you need to do is develop an ear for the music. By listening and understanding the music you will be able to dance to it better. Listen to it, learn to hear the changes in the music from verse to chorus to breaks in the music and back to the verse.

Suggestions for when you can listen to it would be:

  • Getting ready to come to class Tuesday, Friday or Saturday nights.
  • While you make dinner, a real dinner, not McDonalds okay!
  • While Relaxing: What is that you ask? Whether its while you have a spot of tea or a small glass of wine sit back and relax for once!
  • Getting ready in the morning! Add some salsa to your mornings and put some pep in your step. Be careful and don't dance in the shower okay!
  • In the car while you are driving. Try not taking a cell phone, take a minute, and enjoy the moment and the music. You deserve it.

  • 7-8 Beginner Salsa:  Learn the basics each week.  Right Turns, Left Turns and how to lead them.

  • 8-9 Beginner/Int Technique:  Have trouble remembering anything?  Learn 6 different ways to turn your partner right and different combinations each week.

  • 7-8 pm Cross Body Lead w/Turn Technique $12:  Men and Ladies learn technique on how to do your own turns within a Cross Body Lead.  We will break down the steps and spinning technique within a cross body each week.

  • 8-9 pm Intermediate/Advanced: Combination Class:  Unlike the combination class at Gardels, this class will specifically teach a shorter combination that you will be able to repeat to different paces of salsa.  This will also give us time to address more questions by the group.

Dress Code:
Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes will inhibit your spins and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like.  Or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International.  They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

Check out Grace's Shoe Clues Chapter in her Salsa With Grace Instructional Video so she can explain why you need good dance shoes, which should you buy first and how to take care of them! Purchase our Salsa Videos.

3.   Ladies Cross Body Lead Workshop & Latin Aerobics, October 7th

Grace's workshops are very detailed and filled with a wealth of excellent styling tips. Not only can she beautifully demonstrate each dance step, but she has the ability of breaking these steps down in an easy to follow step-by-step manner (a skill which only a few salsa instructors in the world seem to be capable of doing). Every dance movement is broken down according to the "On 1" timing. Ladies Styling moves are added once students have mastered the basic principles behind the step. Occasionally, some dance steps have more than one variation of ladies styling to them. When this is the case, Grace or one of the other DWG instructors will execute these variations and let their students decide for themselves which version fits their style.   Its that time again ladies; time to brush up on your cross body leads and body movement technique.

October 7, 2006 1-5. at the Promenade Dance Sport Facility 2605 Lord Baltimore Drive, Baltimore, MD  21244

1:00-2:45 p.m.  Cross Body Lead Workshop, Review & Drills:  Tired of losing your balance?  Uncertain of your footwork?  Do you want to master your Cross Body Lead so that you can eventually begin to use your arms in a stylish manner?  Grace has put together a 2 hour Cross Body workshop because she feels ladies need more than 1 hour of instruction and practice during a workshop.  Bring your questions & spend some time focusing on one of the most important movements of salsa.  This class will have two 10 minute breaks.

3:00-4:00 p.m.  Latin Aerobics: Bring your tennis shoes and get ready to "get down" to great Latin hits while burning off some of that ice cream or pizza you love!  Try Grace's Latin Aerobics Class.  Grace has been teaching this class to private health clubs for over 5 years.  This class will also include a cool down and ab workout. Come and have some fun!

4:00-5:00 p.m.  Ladies Styling Cool Down:  As we cool down from our Latin Aerobics we will use this hour to focus on slow movements of the hips, shoulders and body.  We must first master stylish movements slowly to understand what are bodies are doing.  Grace will also use this class to help you relax into stretching any soreness away!

Pre Registration Rates:

1 Hour 45 minute Cross Body Lead Workshop:  $35

    Latin Aerobics w/Grace: $10.00

    Ladies Styling Cool Down: $20.00

At the Door Rate will be $5.00 more for each class.  ($40, $15, $25) There will be no refunds if you do not show up as we reserve the floor for each student.  Sign up before September 15 and receive a $5.00 coupon for any group class at Gardels.

Sign up now and get the discounted rate!

Attire: Casual, comfortable sweats or yoga pants, (preferably) salsa practice shoes (for turns and spins on a wooden dance floor). If you don't have salsa shoes, you can wear your evening dance shoes. Tennis shoes are fine or the aerobic class only.  They will inhibit your spins in salsa and may ruin your knees over time. You can go to the DWG Store to see if you find something you like.  Or go on line and check out shoes like Supadance or International.  They can get pricy but make a world of difference when you dance.

4. Fall Session of Salsa at Johns Hopkins University: Update

It’s that time of year again and I am receiving all kinds of questions about our fall session and when it begins.  Right now we are in the process of hammering out a date and getting approval; it looks like they are interested in an 11 week session.  Classes will be 1.5 hours long and cost $15 each.  It looks like there may be a class forming at the end of September.  The tentative date was 9/14 but this is not very solid.  Please check the website for class schedules in a week or two.  We will update what is currently written as soon as we know the date.  For those of you who don't know, my husband updates the website almost daily so we will keep you posted!  We love you guys and cant wait to start another session at the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus.
